Definition
India ink is a type of ink that was first discovered and used for writing, drawing and in printing. India ink has another use in detecting the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. Testing
India ink examination is a test carried out to detect the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans, a fungus that is able to live in humans and animals. Additionally, it can also be found in soil contaminated by bird droppings.
Cryptococcus neoformans most commonly infects the central nervous system. Colonies of this fungus can infect the respiratory tract and can also cause meningitis and cause complications in people who have a compromised immune system. Like those who have AIDS. And can also infect the skin, lungs, spleen, bones, kidneys and liver. Cryptococcus bacteria can also cause death and long-term disability if not detected and treated properly.
Fungal meningitis caused by cryptococcus neoformans occurs quite rarely. This condition may have symptoms similar to acute bacterial meningitis. The infection process is often transmitted by inhaling fungal spores that may be found in soil, rotting wood, and bird droppings.
Fungal meningitis does not spread from person to person. Cryptococcal meningitis is a common form of fungal disease. It affects people with weakened immune systems, such as from HIV/AIDS. It can cause death if not treated with antifungal medication.
