Minyak zaitun dikenal memiliki banyak manfaat bagi kesehatan, termasuk salah satunya untuk menjaga kebersihan telinga. Beberapa orang menggunakan minyak zaitun untuk membersihkan telinga dan mengatasi infeksi telinga. Benarkah cara tersebut efektif?

 

Manfaat Minyak Zaitun untuk Kesehatan Telinga

Minyak zaitun merupakan salah satu minyak herbal yang paling banyak digunakan untuk dikonsumsi dalam diet maupun digunakan dalam pengobatan tradisional. Mengonsumsi minyak zaitun dipercaya memiliki manfaat kesehatan seperti menurunkan risiko penyakit kanker, jantung, dan kondisi lainnya.

Minyak zaitun juga dapat digunakan untuk menjaga kesehatan telinga seperti membersihkan telinga dan mengatasi infeksi. Pemakaian minyak zaitun untuk telinga aman digunakan, namun belum banyak penelitian yang mengungkap manfaat dan efek samping minyak zaitun untuk mengatasi kondisi tersebut. 

Minyak zaitun untuk membersihkan kotoran telinga

Kotoran telinga atau serumen adalah cairan yang dihasilkan oleh kelenjar seruminosa untuk melumasi telinga dan melindungi telinga dari debu, serangga, atau benda asing yang berpotensi membahayakan telinga. Serumen telinga pada setiap orang berbeda-beda, beberapa memiliki serumen yang lengket dan ada juga yang memiliki serumen kering.

Meneteskan minyak zaitun hangat ke telinga dianggap dapat melunakkan kotoran telinga yang mengeras dan membuatnya lebih mudah dikeluarkan. Para ahli menyebutkan bahwa menyemprotkan minyak zaitun ke telinga sebelum irigasi telinga dapat membantu mengeluarkan kotoran telinga dengan lebih mudah.

Sebuah tinjauan di tahun 2020 juga menyebutkan bahwa meneteskan minyak zaitun hangat ke telinga membantu melunakkan kotoran telinga lebih baik daripada air biasa. 

Minyak zaitun untuk infeksi telinga

Minyak zaitun memiliki sifat antibakteri, tetapi belum ada penelitian yang kuat untuk membuktikan bahwa minyak zaitun efektif dalam melawan bakteri penyebab infeksi telinga (otitis media).

Penelitian lain menyebutkan bahwa obat tetes telinga herbal yang mengandung minyak zaitun membantu mengurangi rasa sakit akibat infeksi telinga pada anak-anak. Namun, minyak zaitun ini juga mengandung bahan herbal lain yang menenangkan seperti lavender dan calendula.

Tips Menjaga Kebersihan Telinga

Meskipun minyak zaitun dipercaya memiliki berbagai manfaat bagi kesehatan telinga, namun belum banyak penelitian yang membuktikan manfaat tersebut. Telinga dapat membersihkan dirinya sendiri melalui gerakan-gerakan saat mengunyah atau menggerakkan rahang.

Untuk membersihkan telinga dengan cara yang aman, para ahli tidak menganjurkan penggunaan cotton bud atau alat pengorek telinga karena dapat mendorong kotoran telinga masuk semakin dalam. 

Beberapa cara membersihkan telinga yang dianjurkan para dokter antara lain:

  • Menggunakan kain lembap atau kapas yang dibasahi air untuk menyeka kotoran di bagian luar telinga.
  • Menggunakan tetes pembersih telinga yang dijual bebas. Teteskan produk tersebut ke dalam telinga, tunggu beberapa saat, lalu bersihkan dan bilas telinga Anda.
  • Membersihkan telinga ke dokter. Dokter akan menggunakan alat khusus untuk membersihkan kotoran telinga.

Penanganan Infeksi Telinga

Infeksi telinga umumnya dialami anak-anak. Beberapa jenis infeksi telinga dapat sembuh tanpa penanganan antibiotik. Penanganan infeksi telinga disesuaikan dengan penyebabnya, namun beberapa pengobatan yang bisa diberikan antara lain:

  • Obat-obatan pereda nyeri
  • Antibiotik
  • Steroid untuk meredakan pembengkakan
  • Antijamur

 

Minyak zaitun merupakan minyak herbal yang relatif aman digunakan untuk kesehatan. Meskipun aman, namun belum banyak penelitian yang membuktikan manfaat dan efek samping minyak zaitun untuk mengatasi masalah telinga.
